Transforming Indoor-Outdoor Living: Bi-Fold Doors

The Challenge

Our customer approached Bifold Shop with a specific request; they wanted to create a seamless transition between their indoor living space and external patio area. Their primary goals included maximising as much natural light as possible, enhancing energy efficiency and improving overall aesthetics.

At the time, our customer’s home had an old sliding patio door that no longer met their requirements. Instead, they had several challenges they were keen to address:

• Natural Light – Our customer wanted to flood the living room with natural light while still being able to control the heat during the summer and the cold during the winter. Natural light was something that the existing sliding door didn’t provide enough of.

• Energy Efficiency – To reduce heating and cooling costs in today’s climate (with everyone needing to be a little more wary of their energy bills) our customer wanted a solution that was thermally efficient and ensured their home remained comfortable all year round.

• Seamless Transition – The desire for a smooth transition from indoor to outdoor spaces is something we deal with daily. Our customer’s existing sliding door had a raised threshold, creating an obstacle and limiting accessibility. This was an area they needed help with.

Bifold Shop’s Solution

To meet our customer’s needs, we proposed the installation of a bi-folding door system. This solution would address the outlined challenges and deliver a satisfying result. The technical features of our customer’s system were as follows:

• Flush Threshold – To ensure a seamless transition, we recommended a bi-fold door system with a flush threshold. This feature eliminated the need for a raised step, creating a smooth and uninterrupted floor surface that extended from the indoors to the outdoors. Whilst a small step down was still required to allow for weather rating, our customer understood and was happy with this feature.

• Thermal Efficiency – The bi-fold doors selected for this project were engineered to provide maximum thermal efficiency. They feature double-glazed, low-E glass, which helps to reduce heat transfer and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. The frame also had a thermally broken design, minimising heat loss through the aluminium framework. Adding to this, we also offered integral blinds. These reduce the sun-glare and solar gain, which our customer also went for.

• Security – The bi-fold doors were equipped with a multi-point locking system, offering enhanced security and peace of mind for our customer.

Installation Process

The bi-fold door installation process involved the following steps:

1. Removal of the existing sliding door and frame, ensuring that no structural damage occurred.
2. Preparing the opening for the new bi-fold door system, including levelling the floor for the flush threshold.
3. Installing the bi-fold door frame, ensuring it was plumb, level and securely fixed.
4. Attaching the bi-fold door panels and adjusting them for smooth operation.
5. Securitying the multi-point locking system for added security.
6. Installing the double-glazed, low-E glass panels which were also sealed to prevent drafts and maximise energy efficiency.
7. Conducting a thorough inspection to ensure proper installation and operation.

The installation of the bi-fold door system from Bifold Shop was a success and had several positive outcomes for our customer. The selected system allowed an abundance of natural light into the living space, creating a brighter and more inviting environment with thermally efficient doors and double-glazed glass. As a result, our customer experienced reduced heating and cooling costs, and the flush threshold design eliminated the barrier between indoor and outdoor living spaces, making it easier to move between the two areas. In addition, the modern design of the bi-fold doors significantly improved the aesthetics of the home, giving it a contemporary and stylish appearance.
